I have been with Suzuki for just over 6 years and I am proud to be a brand ambassador involved in such an incredible brand. Suzuki represents what every buyer wants and that is affordability, economy and reliability.
When it comes to my favourite Suzuki, it’s a matter of applying it to lifestyle. The range offered is not age or gender-specific like many other cars out there. My first choice is definitely the Suzuki Jimny but it lacks space which is something I need in my life with two kids.
So, the Suzuki Vitara shifts back to the first position on my list. It was launched in 2015 and its design was something different from all the boring looking SUV’s on the market. The Vitara is perfect for everyday use and even better for tackling adventures and road trips. It is extremely capable off-road and also comes in an All-Grip (all-wheel drive) option for those wanting to tackle some more challenging terrain. Fuel economy in town is great and even better on the long road. I recall a time travelling to Pietermaritzburg and achieving around 16km to a litre of petrol. There are not many SUV’s that you can achieve this in.
Ground clearance is 185mm so you can tackle those gravel roads with confidence. Space is something that I enjoy in a car and there is plenty of room for all sort of things not to mention that the Vitara hosts a boot capacity of 375 litres allowing for 3 large suitcases and space for some other little things.
It is also one of the safest cars on the road, with the most important factors being 7 Airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, Isofix anchorage and others.
When it comes to power the 1.6 delivers enough, 86 kW@6000rpm / 156 Nm@4400rpm, but for those who want that extra oomph, the Vitara now has an optional 1.4 Turbo, 103 kW@5500rpm / 220 Nm@1500-4000rpm, which is very impressive and not a slouch at all. The new engine, however, is only available in the higher-spec GLX model.
Being a music lover, my highlight feature is the head unit. Suzuki has introduced a brilliant CarPlay unit which allows one to plug your phone in and sync with the car. This allows the use of Navigation on the screen and in addition, a reverse camera (this is available on the GL+ and GLX only).
The Vitara comes in 3 variants. These are GL, GL+ and the GLX model. If I were to choose a specific model without being budget conscious it would definitely be the 1.4 Turbo GLX Auto. To be honest, though, the one to buy is the GL+; it is well priced and without a doubt the most popular seller in the range.
I have had the pleasure of driving a few variants as my demo vehicle over the years and would definitely add one of them to my garage in the near future.
